The North Face / Dawa Yangzum Sherpa

Broad Peak

The Production

Broad Peak in 2022 was my first filming assignment in the Karakoram and an opportunity to document an important chapter in Dawa Yangzum Sherpa’s journey across the world’s fourteen 8,000-metre peaks.

Dawa, the first South Asian woman to become an IFMGA mountain guide and a global athlete for The North Face, was working toward completing all fourteen of the world’s 8,000-metre peaks. On this expedition, she became the first Nepali woman to summit 8,047-metre Broad Peak in Pakistan.

I joined the expedition to document her journey through motion, still photography and aerial footage, from base camp through the higher camps and summit push. I carried my camera equipment throughout the climb and reached the summit alongside Dawa, continuing to document the expedition at altitude.

For me, Broad Peak was also an important step professionally. It was my first filming assignment in the Karakoram, taking my high-altitude camera work beyond Nepal and into a new mountain range and environment.

My role

High-Altitude Cinematographer • Photographer • Drone operator

The work

Worked as a high-altitude cinematographer, photographer and drone operator, documenting Dawa Yangzum Sherpa throughout the Broad Peak expedition.

Responsible for motion, still photography and aerial footage while climbing as part of the team. I carried and operated camera equipment through the higher camps and summit push, documenting Dawa’s historic ascent from within the expedition.

Aerial filming was also an important part of the assignment, capturing Broad Peak and the scale of the surrounding Karakoram landscape.
